Sheriff’s officials say a 60-year-old man driving a motorcycle died after he turned in front of an SUV, causing a crash that left a female passenger on the motorcycle in critical condition near Marengo.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts responded around 4:22 p.m. Saturday to Kishwaukee Valley Road and Menge Road in unincorporated Marengo for a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero, driven by a 38-year-old Woodstock woman, was traveling eastbound on Kishwaukee Valley Road.

A 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by a 60-year-old Twin Lakes, Wisconsin man, was traveling westbound on Kishwaukee Valley Road.

The Harley Davidson turned southbound towards Deerpass Road in front of the Mitsubishi, according to the sheriff’s office.

The two vehicles collided in the eastbound lane of traffic.

The man operating the motorcycle and a 52-year-old Woodstock woman, who was a passenger, were both thrown from the motorcycle.

The 60-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

A LifeNet medical helicopter landed at the scene and flew the 52-year-old woman to Javon Bea Hospital—Riverside in Rockford.

Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said she had life-threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office said the woman is currently in critical condition.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and two children who were in the vehicle were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley with minor injuries.

Kishwaukee Valley Road between Hiawatha Lane and Route 23 was shut down for approximately four and a half hours for an investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the male victim.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
