A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was shot when a gunman or gunmen opened fire on a house in Waukegan early Tuesday morning.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 1 a.m. Tuesday to the 600 block of May Street in Waukegan.

Multiple 911 callers reported shots were being fired in the area, according to a police report.

Officers arrived to find a 16-year-old boy was found shot in the abdomen.

Paramedics transported him by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The extent of his injuries was unknown but he has since been stabilized, the report said.

Officers found several spent shell casings in the street and the home had been hit by several rounds.

One of the rounds went through an upstairs bedroom where an elderly resident was inside, the report said.

The residents in the house were reportedly uncooperative with investigators.

A light-colored sedan was possibly the suspect vehicle and it fled the area before officers arrived.

It is unknown how many gunmen were involved. No arrests have been announced.
