A 17-year-old boy had to be extricated by firefighters after he suffered serious injuries when his car was struck by another vehicle and rolled over in Gurnee, police said.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 1:45 p.m. Thursday to Hunt Club Road and Washington Street for a report of a rollover crash with injuries.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that initial reports indicated one person was trapped inside a vehicle.

Emergency crews arrived to assist with providing medical attention and investigating the incident.

Officers learned a black Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on Hunt Club Road, Gaylor said.

The Toyota was attempting to turn left onto westbound Washington Street, while a red Chevrolet Camero was traveling southbound on Hunt Club Road.

As the Chevrolet entered the intersection, the Camry turned left in front of it, Gaylor said.

The impact caused the Chevrolet to hit a curb and strike a light pole before rolling over.

The driver of the Chevrolet was a 17-year-old Gurnee boy, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Firefighters extricated him from the vehicle and paramedics transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The 17-year-old suffered apparent serious injuries but is expected to recover, Gaylor said.

The driver and sole occupant of the Camry was identified as a 75-year-old Lake Bluff man.

He was cited for failure to yield turning left and was also transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center for injuries.

Gaylor said traffic in the area was impacted for nearly five hours while the Illinois Department of Transportation fixed the damaged light pole.
