An 87-year-old died after investigators say she accelerated her car and drove off the roadway where her car struck two trees in Lake Barrington Wednesday afternoon.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday to the 100 block of Waterview Court in Lake Barrington for a single-vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a Nissan Altima with major damage, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

A preliminary investigation shows the Nissan was traveling northbound on Waterview Court.

The driver of the Nissan, an 87-year-old Lake Barrington, accelerated for an unknown reason and drove off the roadway into a yard.

The Nissan struck a garbage can and a small tree before striking a second larger tree, Covelli said.

The woman sustained significant injuries in the crash.

Covelli said lifesaving efforts were attempted on the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no one else was injured.

Traffic crash investigators are working to determine if the woman unintentionally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal, causing her to lose control, Covelli said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and an autopsy is being scheduled.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification to her family.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
