A suspect who was driving a stolen vehicle, which broke down, was given a ride by an officer to a gas station in Riverwoods where the man then stole from the business and fled.
The Riverwoods Police Department responded around 7:49 p.m. last Wednesday to the Mobil gas station, 2201 Deerfield Road in Riverwoods, for a call of a money theft.
Riverwoods Police Chief Bruce Dayno said officers learned the clerk was busy away from the cash register of the gas station.
A suspect stole over $600 in cash from the register, according to an alert sent out to area police departments.
The suspect fled from the area on foot, Dayno said. A police search did not result in finding him.
Dayno said the suspect had stolen a vehicle out of Gurnee prior to the theft.
The suspect’s stolen vehicle reportedly ran out of gas in Riverwoods.
A police officer, not knowing the car was stolen, gave the suspect a ride to the Mobil gas station and dropped him off just before the theft occurred.
An alert sent out to area police departments said the male suspect was possibly spotted on foot at an apartment complex off of Parkway North south of Deerfield Road in Deerfield around 8 p.m. that same evening.
The incident remains under investigation by the Riverwoods Police Department.
