A report of a gunshot fired in Ingleside prompted schools in Round Lake Heights to go on a precautionary lockdown Thursday, authorities said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded early Thursday afternoon to the 24400 block of West Black Cherry Lane in Ingleside.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said a 911 caller reported a gunshot fired.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and searched the area for evidence.
Deputies were unable to locate any evidence that a gun was discharged, Covelli said.
Deputies are reviewing video surveillance in the area as part of the investigation.
The schools in the area were informed of the situation and went into a soft lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” Covelli said.
Round Lake Middle School and Indian Hill Elementary School in Round Lake Heights sent a message to parents around 1:15 p.m. to report the schools were in “secure status” due to the incident.
Secure status means all students and staff remained indoors.
“We have been advised by the local police department that while the incident is still being investigated, they don’t believe the individual is in the area any longer,” a school representative said in an email to parents.
Deputies cleared from the scene at 1:50 p.m.
The schools were dismissed at the normal time with extra police presence on the school property.
