A Wonder Lake police officer was recognized for his quick actions in coming to the aid of a severely injured victim after witnessing a crash while out of town in South Carolina.

The City of Charleston, South Carolina Police Department said Wonder Lake Police Officer Brian Howard is a “shining example” of a hero.

Howard was visiting the area earlier this summer after his mother died.

Howard witnessed a rollover crash where a man suffered a near-severed arm.

The off-duty officer immediately jumped into action until first responders arrived.

He applied tourniquets to slow the victim’s bleeding.

The police department said Howard’s quick thinking and decisive action made “all the difference in a dire situation.”

Howard also worked alongside Charleston Police Officers Green and Walts, Charleston Fire Department and Charleston County EMS to manage the scene.

“Their collective efforts remind us that our first responders are truly exceptional individuals, dedicated to saving lives no matter where they are!” the police department said on social media.

“We salute Officer Howard, our officers, and our fellow first responders for their unwavering commitment to service,” the department added.

The Wonder Lake Police Department said they were proud of Howard.

The department joked that the chief owed the officer donuts next time he was on shift.

“Well done Officer Howard. We’re Proud of you!! Power rings on the Chief next time you work,” the Wonder Lake Police Department said.
