Fire department crews rescued an elderly man from Silver Lake in Oakwood Hills after his sailboat overturned in the middle of the lake Thursday morning.

The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 10:12 a.m. Thursday to the 100 block of Lakeview Lane in Oakwood Hills for a report of a water rescue.

A 911 caller on the shore reported they could see someone clinging to a tipped-over sailboat on Silver Lake, according to Cary Fire Protection District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha.

Rescue crews arrived within six minutes and confirmed a small sailboat had overturned in the middle of the lake.

A rescue boat was quickly launched from the Oakwood Hills North Beach and transported rescuers to the scene.

An elderly adult male was safely lifted into the rescue boat and assisted to shore, Vucha said.

The man was evaluated by paramedics on shore but refused transport to the hospital.

The Fox River Grove Fire Protection District and Oakwood Hills Police Department assisted at the scene.

“Even the most experienced swimmers can drown. Wearing a life jacket is a simple life-saving technique that can prevent water related tragedies,” Vucha said.
