UPDATE: The child has been located safely, police said, adding that no further information would be released.

Police are searching for a 12-year-old girl who went missing near an elementary school in Algonquin Wednesday afternoon and has not been seen since.

The Algonquin Police Department said they are searching for 12-year-old Mackenzie Martinez.

The girl also goes by Kenzie, police said.

Martinez is described as being 5-foot-7 with green eyes, brown hair with blonde highlights, with a light complexion.

She was last seen wearing a long-sleeved shirt, denim shorts, white high socks and white Nike gym shoes. She was carrying a light green backpack.

Martinez was last seen during the afternoon hours on Wednesday.

She was spotted in the 2100 block of Sleepy Hollow Road in Algonquin near Westfield Community School.

Police say the ongoing investigation to locate her has not revealed “anything leading to believe there is a threat to public or otherwise.”

Police did not say whether they believed the girl was endangered.
