A man was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a rollover crash that left him and a woman heavily trapped in their truck for an hour near Marengo Tuesday afternoon.

The Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts responded around 4:01 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Route 23 and Carls Road in unincorporated Marengo for a vehicle crash with injuries and entrapment.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within nine minutes and found a white pickup truck on its side in the ditch, according to Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts Communication Specialist Alex Vucha.

The crash, which occurred just south of the intersection, left two adult victims trapped in the front seat of the truck.

A third occupant of the car, an adult male, had self-extricated prior to the fire department’s arrival, Vucha said.

Firefighters stabilized the overturned vehicle and began extricating the victims. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Two medical helicopters were initially requested to the scene but one of them was canceled because it was not needed.

Vucha said the LifeNet medical helicopter landed on Route 23 just north of the scene.

Firefighters successfully extricated the two victims from the car just after 5 p.m., more than an hour after the crash occurred.

The adult male driver was flown to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford with critical, life-threatening injuries, Vucha said.

An adult female passenger was transported by ambulance to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside with minor injuries.

The adult male passenger who escaped the vehicle prior to the fire department’s arrival reported no injuries and refused to be evaluated by paramedics.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
