A 13-year-old child was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Buffalo Grove Wednesday morning, officials said.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department and Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 7:28 a.m. Wednesday to the area of Weiland Road and Newtown Drive in Buffalo Grove for a crash involving a bicyclist and car.

911 callers reported the injured bicyclist was not breathing, according to fire department radio traffic.

Officers arrived and found the victim unconscious and barely breathing.

A preliminary investigation showed that a 13-year-old boy was riding a bicycle in a crosswalk, according to Village of Buffalo Grove Communications Coordinator Tim Kirsininkas.

He was struck by a vehicle, which was traveling northbound on Weiland Road.

The driver of the vehicle, a 66-year-old Wheeling resident, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Kirsininkas said.

Paramedics transported the child to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Kirsininkas said the child is expected to survive.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) and Buffalo Grove Police Department Traffic Unit were called to the scene to investigate.

No charges have been filed yet. The driver of the car was uninjured.

Police say they remind motorists that school is back in session.

Drivers should slow down and be alert for children in crosswalks and school zones.
