A driver was arrested after crashing their car into the middle of a pond in Lake Forest and fleeing the scene Sunday afternoon, police said.
The Lake Forest Police Department and Lake Forest Fire Department responded around 2:05 p.m. Sunday to Route 60 and Conway Farms Drive in Lake Forest for a report of a water rescue.
Fire crews arrived and found an SUV partially submerged in water in a pond on the southwest corner of the intersection.
It was initially reported that the driver had gotten out of the car before emergency crews arrived but a passenger was still in the car.
Multiple fire departments were dispatched with divers and boats to the scene.
Fire crews confirmed after arriving that all occupants were out of the car.
Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Michael Lange said the driver was arrested by officers.
The driver was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage crash and driving on a suspended driver’s license.
The driver’s license had previously been suspended for a driving under the influence offense.
Only one vehicle was involved in the crash, Lange said. It is unclear what led to the car driving off the roadway.
Lange said no injuries were reported in the incident.
An Ernie’s Wrecker Service tow truck responded and used a winch cable to pull the vehicle from the pond so it could be towed from the scene.
