A 23-year-old man has been charged after prosecutors say he lit a fire that engulfed a car parked inside the garage at his mother’s home in Buffalo Grove.
Evan Rude, 23, of Buffalo Grove, was charged with one count of criminal damage to property between $500 and $10,000, a Class 4 felony.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano said officers were stationed at the Buffalo Grove Days festival on September 2.
Rude approached the officers and told them there was a car on fire nearby, Mandujano said.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department and Buffalo Grove Police Department were dispatched around 9:15 p.m. to the residence in the 900 block of Lucinda Drive.
Firefighters arrived and found a car on fire inside an attached garage of a house.
The car belongs to Rude’s mother, Mandujano said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly.
Mandujano said video surveillance showed Rude walking up to the car and lighting a lighter.
The video showed Rude walking away from the car and flames could then be seen, Mandujano said.
Lake County Judge Ari Fisz ordered Rude held in the Lake County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Rude was released from the jail after posting 10% of his bond.
A status of attorney hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
