The coroner’s office has released the identity of a 66-year-old man fatally struck by a vehicle in Waukegan earlier this month after extensively working to notify his relatives.

An autopsy was performed on September 11 on Kurt Kuhnle, 66, of Waukegan, who died as a result of blunt force injuries from a crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 10 p.m. on September 8 to the area of Dave’s Liquors, 2300 Grand Avenue in Waukegan.

911 callers reported a vehicle had struck a pedestrian near the business, according to fire department radio traffic.

The bystanders reported Kuhnle was not responsive and not breathing.

A medical helicopter was requested to be put on standby but later canceled.

Paramedics rushed Kuhnle to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.

The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit responded to the scene to begin investigating.

The report said the vehicle was traveling westbound on Grand Avenue and struck Kuhnle as he was crossing the roadway.

Grand Avenue was shut down between Leith Avenue and Berwick Boulevard for several hours during the investigation.

The coroner’s office had publicly withheld Kuhnle’s identity until Wednesday after extensively working to locate and notify his relatives about the death.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
