School officials issued an emergency closure for all Round Lake District 116 schools Thursday due to a “high risk” incident involving a high school student.
The Round Lake Area Schools District 116, which has schools in Round Lake, Round Lake Heights, Round Lake Beach and Round Lake Park, sent an email to parents Wednesday evening about the situation.
Superintendent Donn Mendoza said an emergency school closure was issued for all schools in the district for Thursday.
Mendoza said it was due to an ongoing safety incident in the community that involved a student.
The incident involved a student from the high school and was considered to be “high risk.”
“[…] therefore necessitates additional planning with local law enforcement for how we will hold school following tomorrow,” Mendoza said.
The superintendent said that since the school district is a unit district and transportation routes are throughout the community, the decision was made to cancel all schools.
“We understand that this decision may cause conflicts with family schedules. However, we feel it is in everyone’s best interest to ensure that we have a plan to address this matter in the safest and most appropriate manner,” Mendoza said.
The district will develop a comprehensive plan on Thursday regarding moving forward.
“We apologize in advance for the relatively short notice of this information,” the superintendent added.
Grayslake Central High School said Thursday morning that the safety issue has since been resolved. “We do not believe the Grayslake 127 community was impacted or under threat at any time.”
The Round Lake Police Department did not immediately return a request for comment on the incident.
