Police are investigating after a seller stole approximately $20,000 in cash from a person who met up with them looking to buy a vehicle in Highland Park.

The Highland Park Police Department responded around 4:12 p.m. Saturday to Casey’s, 1333 Half Day Road in Highland Park, for a report of a theft.

A police report said the victim was meeting up with another person, who was purported to be a car seller.

The victim had brought approximately $20,000 in cash to the meet-up in hopes of purchasing a vehicle from the seller, the report said.

The car seller stole the money and fled the scene, leaving the buyer behind with no car.

The incident is considered a theft and not a robbery because no force was used or implied, the report said.

An alert was broadcasted to area police departments with the suspect’s information following the incident.

The male suspect was reported to have fled the scene in an orange 2022 Chevrolet Camero.

The Chevrolet was last seen driving away northbound on Skokie Valley Road from Half Day Road.

Police have not announced any charges or arrests in the case yet.
