The coroner has identified a 28-year-old man who died after his motorcycle was struck by a car in Round Lake Beach and his family says they are devastated and in shock by his death.
An autopsy performed Monday showed Alexis Aguilar-Liberato, 28, of Round Lake Beach, died as a result of blunt force injuries from a vehicle crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 4:04 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 83 and Hook Drive in Round Lake Beach for a vehicle crash with injuries.
A preliminary investigation showed a 2009 Hyundai was traveling northbound on Route 83 south of Hook Drive, according to police officials.
The Hyundai was preparing to turn west into a strip mall located between Hook Drive and Rollins Road.
The Hyundai collided with a motorcycle, which was traveling southbound on Route 83, as it attempted to pull into the parking lot.
Aguilar-Liberato was operating the motorcycle and suffered critical injuries, police officials said.
Officers arrived to find Aguilar-Liberato not breathing and began performing CPR on him.
Paramedics rushed Aguilar-Liberato to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police officials said there is no indication excessive speed, drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
The driver of the Hyundai remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators.
Route 83 was shut down between Rollins Road and Hook Drive for several hours Sunday for the investigation.
Round Lake Beach resident Cynthia Campos, who is the cousin of Aguilar-Liberato, said the family is in shock over the loss.
Aguilar-Liberato’s mother is “devasted” by the death of her only son. “He was 28 years old and had so much life left to live,” Campos said.
The family is working to send Aguilar-Liberato’s body to Mexico to be buried next to his grandmother.
A GoFundMe fundraiser to help pay for those expenses has already raised nearly $9,000.
The crash remains under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.
