Authorities say a 17-year-old boy died after he was shot in Round Lake and driven to a gas station in Round Lake Beach where he was found unresponsive Wednesday evening.
Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said officers in the Round Lake area began a search around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a 911 call from a cellphone.
A Round Lake Beach police officer located a black Mercedes at the Citgo gas station on the corner of Cedar Lake Road and Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach.
Officers saw the Mercedes had been damaged by gunfire.
Officers located a 17-year-old Fox Lake boy with a gunshot wound, Covelli said.
The boy was not breathing and officers began performing CPR after calling for the fire department.
The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead.
Covelli said a further investigation showed the boy was a passenger in the vehicle that sustained the gunshot damage.
It was determined the shooting occurred in the area of Midland Drive and Sycamore Drive in Round Lake.
The driver of the Mercedes along with the victim and a third occupant were stopped in the area to meet someone.
Covelli said the group was approached by at least one person on foot and a shooting took place a short time later.
The gunman fled the scene and the Mercedes drove off.
The driver of the Mercedes drove to the Round Lake Beach gas station where officers located the vehicle and victim, Covelli said.
The Round Lake Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force with the investigation.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy on the boy, whose identity is being withheld.
The homicide remains under investigation by Task Force investigators and Round Lake officers.
