A driver suffered serious injuries and was flown to a trauma center after slamming his car into a Starbucks store, damaging the building, in McHenry Friday evening.

The McHenry Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 9:38 p.m. Friday to the Starbucks, 2318 Richmond Road in McHenry, for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Fire crews arrived to find a Toyota Camry that crashed into the building.

The Toyota had sustained heavy front-end damage and the building also sustained noticeable damage.

The driver, a 22-year-old man, was trapped inside the vehicle following the impact.

Firefighters had to extricate him from the Toyota. A LifeNet medical helicopter was placed on standby.

Paramedics transported the driver to the helipad at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.

The ambulance met with the helicopter crews and transferred the victim to the helicopter.

The helicopter flew the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, which is a Level 1 trauma center.

Brian Ward, who was just getting off work, told Lake and McHenry County Scanner he witnessed the crash and immediately called 911.

“He was going pretty fast considering the damage that was done to the car and the building,” Ward said, adding that the front of the Toyota was “pretty much flattened” all the way to the windshield.

Ward said the driver “straight floored the gas [pedal]” from the parking lot into the corner of the Starbucks.

“It was very loud at how fast the car was moving. I couldn’t believe the destruction,” Ward said.

Ward believes the driver intentionally crashed into the building based on what he witnessed. “I hope he’s okay and he gets help if that’s the case,” he said.

The victim was not responding to the witness, who was trying to talk to him.

Ward said the injured driver was covered in blood and had large lacerations to his face, neck, arms and legs.

ComEd crews were requested to shut off power to the entire building where Starbucks is located.

A company responded to board up the area of the Starbucks where the car crashed through, which was located on the corner of the building along the drive-thru side.

Starbucks remains closed as of Saturday due to the crash.
