A 21-year-old man has been charged after prosecutors say he was found with a loaded gun after he and another person showed up at a psychiatric hospital in Waukegan with gunshot wounds.

Darius D. Redmond, 21, of Wheeling, was charged in July with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

An arrest warrant was issued and Redmond was taken into custody earlier this month.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 7 p.m. on July 9 to Lake Behavioral Hospital, 2615 Washington Street in Waukegan.

Two people with gunshot wounds were found in a red vehicle outside of the psychiatric hospital.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said one of the victims was Redmond, who was in the backseat bleeding after being shot in the abdomen.

Redmond was found wearing a satchel across his chest with an extended magazine sticking out.

Officers found a 9mm handgun with the extended magazine almost fully loaded, Katris said. The magazine was missing two bullets.

Katris said Redmond told investigators he was at a house party in Waukegan when he was shot outside.

Redmond does not have a Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license.

An initial police report said Redmond and the second injured person claimed they accidentally shot themselves.

The subjects involved were uncooperative with investigators, the report said.

Officers learned the shooting occurred at a residence in the 1300 block of Grand Avenue in Waukegan during a birthday party.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak granted a petition to hold Redmond in the Lake County Jail pending trial.

Potkonjak said there are no conditions that could mitigate the threat to the community that Redmond poses.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 2.
