A Chicago man allegedly stole an elderly woman’s wallet at a grocery store in Crystal Lake and spent almost $7,000 at other nearby stores using her credit cards.
Timmy L. Weeks, 61, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated identity theft, a Class 2 felony, and theft over $500, a Class 3 felony.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said a woman was shopping at Mariano’s, 105 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake, around 2:45 p.m. on June 24.
The 77-year-old woman had her purse in her shopping cart while she was shopping for groceries.
Weeks removed the woman’s wallet from her purse and stole it, according to the complaint.
The complaint said Weeks conspired with an unidentified female to make unauthorized purchases using the victim’s credit cards that were in the stolen wallet.
$6,798 in purchases were made a short time later at Sam’s Club, 5670 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake, and Best Buy, 5880 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake.
An arrest warrant was issued for Weeks in late July, court records show. He was taken into custody on Monday.
The charges are non-detainable under the SAFE-T Act and Weeks was released from the McHenry County Jail.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge set conditions of release for Weeks during a court hearing Monday.
Weeks is scheduled to appear in court again on November 15 for a status of preliminary hearing.
