A suspect fleeing the scene of a home invasion and fleeing from police was killed after he slammed into parked cars at a high rate of speed, injuring a pedestrian, in Round Lake Beach.

The Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday to a call of a home invasion in the 100 block of Beachview Drive in Round Lake Beach.

The 911 caller reported a male subject was trying to gain entry into the home, according to police officials.

Officers were also told the person trying to gain access to the home had been involved in a prior relationship with the home’s resident.

The male suspect fled the property in a 2010 Nissan after the police were called.

As officers were responding to the location, they spotted the 2010 Nissan fleeing westbound on Rollins Road.

Officers activated their emergency lights to stop the Nissan but the home invasion suspect sped away at a high rate of speed.

Police officials said officers did not pursue due to the safety concern of there being traffic on Rollins Road.

The Nissan continued driving at a high rate of speed on Rollins Road before it left the roadway near Lotus Drive and slammed into two parked cars for sale in the 800 block of West Rollins Road.

A 55-year-old man, who was out of his car looking at the parked vehicles for sale, was struck by one of the parked cars that spun into him when the Nissan struck the vehicles.

The force of the collision threw the pedestrian into the roadway.

The unidentified driver of the Nissan was unresponsive after the crash. He was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The 55-year-old pedestrian injured in the collision was transported to an area hospital by ambulance. His condition was unknown.

The roadway was shut down for several hours while an investigation was conducted.

The crash is under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT).
