An SUV sustained heavy damage after it crashed at the entrance of the emergency room at NorthShore Highland Park Hospital Thursday morning.

The Highland Park Police Department and Highland Park Fire Department responded around 8:15 a.m. Thursday to the NorthShore University HealthSystem Hospital, 777 Park Avenue West in Highland Park.

Emergency crews arrived to find a single-vehicle crash involving the building.

The SUV sustained heavy damage after reportedly striking a pillar in front of the entrance to the emergency room.

The driver of the vehicle was taken inside the hospital to be evaluated before paramedics arrived.

City officials said investigators determined the crash was accidental and not intentional.

They did not provide further information on what led to the incident.

The Highland Park Building Department was notified and responded to the scene to inspect the structure.

Workers were seen shoring up the damaged pillar and cleaning up debris. The emergency department remains open.

City officials also said they had received reports of two helicopters in the area, which were news helicopters flying overhead due to the crash.

Lake and McHenry County Scanner has reached out to authorities for further information.
