Officials say Crystal Lake’s newest and largest mixed-use project is underway and will bring restaurants, townhomes, apartments, a hotel and more shopping to the city.

The project, dubbed The Water’s Edge, is currently underway in the 5500-5600 block of Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake.

Crews are working to demolish the Crystal Court Shopping Center for the redevelopment.

The new development will bridge the “natural beauty” of Three Oaks Recreation Area with the vibrancy of Crystal Lake’s main commercial corridor, city officials said.

The project is being led by Heartland Real Estate Partners, a commercial, retail and residential real estate development firm based in Chicago.

Heartland Real Estate Partners said The Water’s Edge neighborhood will feature 240 garden apartments and 20 luxury townhomes.

The development, which has been in the works for several years, will also feature restaurants, shopping and hotels.

The residences at The Water’s Edge will boast a “full suite of exciting amenities,” including a pool, volleyball court, clubroom and more, according to the company.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday.

City officials say the project — approximately 30 acres — will be the largest in Crystal Lake.
