The family of a 17-year-old boy who died Thursday after he fell from a fence at his Round Lake Beach home says the teenager had a “huge heart” and a “long life ahead.”

An autopsy performed Thursday showed Alexis Rodriguez, 17, of Round Lake Beach, died as a result of blunt force injuries to his neck, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 12:30 a.m. Thursday to the 2000 block of Evergreen Lane in Round Lake Beach.

Fire department radio traffic indicated an injured person was bleeding.

Paramedics arrived and found the victim, later identified as Rodriguez, was not conscious and not breathing.

Police officials said Rodriguez resided at the residence where the incident occurred.

The juvenile appeared to have been climbing a fence in the backyard of his home when he fell.

The homeowners and residents of the home heard a loud crash, investigated and called 911 after finding Rodriguez critically injured.

Paramedics performed lifesaving measures on the teenager but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicates the incident is accidental in nature and not suspicious.

Round Lake Beach resident Mayela Gomez said Rodriguez was “an amazing human” and “had a huge heart.”

“He was a loving sibling, great friend, amazing nephew & cousin & most of all, the best son a parent could have. […] He was young and had a long life ahead,” Gomez said.

The family created a GoFundMe account to help raise money for Rodriguez’s funeral service. The account has raised over $2,000 in less than four hours.

The death remains under investigation by the Round Lake Beach Police Department.
