The community has raised over $60,000 by hosting fundraisers for a family who “lost everything,” including their dog, in a fire that destroyed their home in Hawthorn Woods.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 4:03 p.m. last Tuesday to the 0-10 block of Robin Crest Road in Hawthorn Woods for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived in three minutes to find a two-story wood-frame house heavily involved in flames, according to Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department Chief David Pilgard.
The family was accounted for as they were not home at the time of the fire, Pilgard said.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the third-alarm level.
The activation prompted approximately 30 fire departments to respond to the scene and to cover Lake Zurich fire stations.
Pilgard said the area has no fire hydrants and many water tender trucks were called to the scene.
Firefighters set up a large diameter hose leading into the incident.
Fire engines pumped water to the scene where a ladder truck was utilized along with multiple hose lines on the ground to spray water onto the fire, Pilgard said.
No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, which was declared under control around 5:30 p.m.
Pilgard initially said a dog was unaccounted for following the fire.
Fire officials later said that the family dog was confirmed to have died.
Crews remained on the scene for hours extinguishing hot spots, conducting overhaul and performing an investigation.
The home, which had nearly nothing left of it still standing, was deemed a complete loss.
Fire officials said the loss of the house was estimated at $610,000.
A GoFundMe fundraiser created by neighbor Kathy Lindstrom has raised over $60,000 for the Vanderbilt family.
“What do you think is the measure of a great community? Is it individuals, businesses, first responders, families or organizations? In the case of the Lake Zurich area community, it’s all of those,” Lindstrom said.
“The Vanderbilt Family lost everything and immediately this community jumped into action! Donations of clothes, household items, gift cards, money to this Go Fund Me, prayers and other offers of help poured in from every part of this great community!” she said.
LifeTime Fitness of Lake Zurich and Lululemon of Deer Park partnered to run two classes, which were hosted at the gym on Thursday, to raise money for the family.
