Authorities say a 19-year-old man is in critical condition after a speeding car drove off the road and struck a tree and a pole in Long Grove Sunday evening.

The Long Grove Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11 p.m. Sunday to Schaffer Road north of Lake Cook Road for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows an Acura ILX was traveling northbound on Schaeffer Road, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

The driver, a 22-year-old Rolling Meadows man, drove off of the roadway for unknown reasons.

The Acura struck a tree and a utility pole after traveling off the roadway to the east, Covelli said.

A 19-year-old Palatine man, who was a rear-seat passenger, sustained critical injuries, including a skull fracture.

He was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The 22-year-old driver was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two other passengers, both 20-year-old men, were uninjured. No other vehicles were involved.

Covelli said alcohol and excessive speed appear to be factors in the crash.

No charges have been announced yet.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
