The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:30 a.m. Monday to Fairfield Road and Nippersink Road in unincorporated Round Lake for a vehicle crash with injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows a Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a Round Lake Beach woman, was traveling northbound on Fairfield Road.
The Chevrolet veered into the southbound lanes of traffic after crossing Nippersink Road, Covelli said.
The Chevrolet struck a southbound Acura MDX, driven by a 39-year-old Wauconda woman, head-on north of the intersection.
The Acura had two middle-school-aged children in the car.
Covelli said both drivers were transported to area hospitals with critical injuries.
The children were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries. Their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
It is unknown yet what caused the Chevrolet to drive into oncoming lanes.
An open container of alcohol was located in the Chevrolet, Covelli said.
