Heavy traffic delays are reported on Route 12 in Lake Zurich after a semi truck’s load shifted and a concrete beam sheared the truck’s cab off. The occupants survived with only minor injuries.
The Lake Zurich Police Department and Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 8:56 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Route 12 and Deerpath Road in Lake Zurich for a report of a vehicle crash.
The incident was initially reported to be a semi-truck rollover crash.
Fire crews arrived on the scene to find an incident involving a semi-truck, which had not rolled over.
Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Chief David Pilgard said the flatbed semi-truck’s load shifted while the truck was braking.
A structural concrete beam broke free and sheared the cab of the truck off while two occupants were inside, Pilgard said.
The two men were able to get out of the truck cab, which was left on the ground, on their own.
Pilgard said the two men in the cab “miraculously” survived. One of them was transported to a hospital for minor injuries.
A northbound lane and a southbound lane of Route 12 were shut down and remain closed as of 9:45 a.m.
Ernie’s Wrecker Service is responding for the cleanup and removal of the beam and truck, Pilgard said.
Heavy traffic delays are reported on Route 12 and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
