Firefighters safely rescued a Golden Retriever puppy who ran onto a retention pond and fell through the ice in Libertyville, fire officials said.
The Libertyville Fire Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Golf Road and Country Club Drive in Libertyville for a report of a water rescue.
A 911 dispatcher reported a Golden Retriever fell through the ice on the pond south of the pool at the Libertyville Recreation Department.
Libertyville Assistant Fire Chief Justin Hubbard told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a father and son were walking at the park.
Their 11-month-old puppy, which was off leash, ran onto the icy retention pond.
The dog fell through the ice approximately 20-30 feet offshore, Hubbard said.
A firefighter put on a Mustang suit, which is for cold water and ice conditions, and went into the pond.
The firefighter was able to bring the dog to shore. It was clinging to ice shells when the firefighter reached it, Hubbard said.
No injuries were reported and the dog was returned to its owner safely.
