Craig Whittington, 40, of Spring Grove.

A man has been sentenced to three years in prison after prosecutors say he stole a car before crashing it into a tree while driving drunk in Spring Grove.

Craig Whittington, 40, of Spring Grove, was charged in June with driving on a revoked or suspended license, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a revoked license, improper traffic lane usage, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated driving under the influence and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

The Spring Grove Police Department responded to reports of a traffic crash and a stolen vehicle on June 29.

The 911 caller, a friend of Whittington’s, reported that Whittington had taken her Honda Accord without permission, prosecutors said.

The caller also reported Whittington was driving while intoxicated.

Whittington’s driving privileges were revoked at the time and he admitted he consumed six shots of vodka that evening, prosecutors said.

The stolen vehicle was quickly located a few blocks from the owner’s residence. It was crashed into a tree.

Whittington entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office earlier this week.

He pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, and aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 4 felony.

McHenry County Judge Tiffany Davis sentenced Whittington to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The sentence will be served at 50% in accordance with truth-in-sentencing guidelines.
