A police officer was hospitalized after a car slammed into the rear of his stopped squad car, resulting in all lanes of Route 120 near Libertyville being shut down Saturday morning.
A Park City police officer was on the scene of a non-injury crash on Route 120 between Hanlon Road and River Road in unincorporated Libertyville.
The officer’s unmarked squad car was struck by another vehicle around 12:04 a.m. Saturday, according to Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Heraver.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
A Cadillac SUV rear-ended the stopped squad car, which left the police officer injured.
The Cadillac had just exited from Interstate 94 and was traveling westbound when the crash occurred.
Fire crews arrived to find the crash left debris on both westbound and eastbound Route 120, Heraver said.
Paramedics transported the officer to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
Heraver told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the officer is in good condition and doing well.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to conduct a crash investigation.
Both directions of Route 120 were completely shut down for several hours.
No other injuries were reported besides for the officer, Heraver said.
It was unclear whether any other vehicles were involved besides the squad car and the Cadillac.
