A SWAT team conducting a warrant arrested an alleged gang member who prosecutors say threw a gun and drugs outside of his window in Mundelein.

Orlando Garcia, 28, of Mundelein, was charged with armed violence, manufacturing or delivery of cocaine under 100 grams and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Vukovich said the Mundelein Police Department and Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team (NIPAS EST) conducted a search warrant on December 1.

The warrant was conducted at Garcia’s home in Mundelein and officers observed the man throwing several items out of a window into a neighbor’s yard, Vukovich said.

Vukovich said the items included a loaded Smith and Wesson .22 caliber firearm and a bag containing a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine weighing 22 grams.

Two more guns were found in Garcia’s residence along with firearm magazines and ammunition.

Four more bags containing a white powdery substance weighing approximately four grams. Several thousands of dollars in cash was recovered, Vukovich said.

Vukovich said officers also found several cell phones, a notebook containing names and initials along with dollar amounts, and books called “Latin King Manifesto” and “Latin King Constitution.”

Vukovich said Garcia is a documented Latin King gang member and does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license.

Garcia is on probation for another criminal case where he resisted a police officer.

Attorney John Radosevich said a person who lives in Garcia’s home possesses a valid FOID card. Radosevich said his client does not have any felony convictions.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Garcia held pending trial after prosecutors filed a petition to detain him.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
