Firefighters found a woman dead after extinguishing heavy flames that engulfed an apartment at a seven-story apartment building in Waukegan Saturday evening, fire officials said.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 7:45 p.m. Saturday to Cinnamon Lake Towers, 2725 West Glen Flora Avenue in Waukegan.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said crews initially responded after receiving a report that the building’s fire alarm had activated.

While fire crews were still responding, dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting there was an active fire on the first floor.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy flames coming from the window of a first-floor apartment, Zupec said.

Firefighters entered from the patio door and the building corridor in order to extinguish the fire.

The residents of the seven-story building were evacuated with the help of firefighters and police officers.

Crews searched the apartment where the fire originated and found an adult female victim.

The woman was determined to be deceased and was located in the bedroom of the apartment.

Zupec said the fire was contained to the unit where it started.

Firefighters removed smoke from several floors of the building and from apartment units before residents were allowed back inside.

Damage to the building was estimated at $200,000, Zupec said. The Lake County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the woman.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Waukegan Fire Department, Waukegan Police Department and the Lake County Coronerโ€™s Office.
