Dominic Z. Trujillo, 20, of McHenry.

A McHenry man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for luring two victims before robbing them at gunpoint and shooting at one of them in Wonder Lake.

Dominic Z. Trujillo, 20, of McHenry, was charged in September 2020 with two counts of armed robbery, aggravated discharge of a firearm, two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:15 p.m. on May 4, 2020, to the 7600 block of Maplewood Drive in Wonder Lake for a report of an armed robbery.

Deputies spoke with witnesses and were able to determine that Trujillo pretended to be selling video game consoles when he lured two young men to a secluded backyard, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Trujillo, armed with a gun, threatened both men into handing over their wallets and cell phones.

Trujillo, who was 17 at the time, brandished the gun during the robbery and then discharged the weapon at one of the victims.

Neither victim was injured in the incident.

Law enforcement used eyewitness accounts and social media records to identify Trujillo. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Trujillo on September 9, 2020.

Trujillo was processed at the McHenry County Jail and held on a $250,000 bond. He was later denied pre-trial released under the new SAFE-T Act.

Court records show Trujillo entered into a negotiated plea deal this week with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery, a Class X felony, and the rest of his charges were dismissed as part of the plea.

McHenry County Judge Tiffany Davis approved the plea deal and sentenced Trujillo to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections pursuant to the plea.
