The fire department is investigating after an abandoned house, which was scheduled to be demolished, was destroyed after being engulfed in flames in Wadsworth Friday evening.

The Newport Fire Protection District responded around 9 p.m. Friday to the area of North Mill Creek Road and Cermak Drive in Wadsworth for a report of a structure fire.

A 911 caller initially reported a barn was fully involved in flames.

Firefighters arrived to find the structure was a house, not a barn, and it was confirmed to be engulfed in flames.

Fire officials said firefighters stood by and let the fire burn because there was nothing to save.

The fire did not spread and was not a threat to other nearby structures.

Fire officials said the house was abandoned and no injuries were reported.

The home was scheduled to be demolished within a month after a company bought the vacant property.
