Police say a 21-year-old man is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while allegedly handling a gun in a “reckless manner” in Libertyville.

The Libertyville Fire Department and Libertyville Police Department responded around 3:57 p.m. on December 21 to the 800 block of East Rockland Road in Libertyville.

Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Chad Roszkowiak said it was initially reported that a male subject accidentally shot himself in the leg while cleaning his gun.

Officers arrived and were directed to the male subject who suffered a gunshot wound to his upper leg, Roszkowiak said. They provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.

Officers identified the gunshot victim as John D. Hernandez, 21, of Libertyville.

The Libertyville Fire Department transported Hernandez to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.

Roszkowiak said a records check determined Hernandez possessed a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

Officers investigated and learned Hernandez was not actually cleaning his handgun at the time of the discharge, Roszkowiak said.

He had allegedly been handling the firearm in a reckless manner which resulted in the gun’s accidental discharge, Roszkowiak said.

The incident was reviewed with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and charges were approved for reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony.

Hernandez was released from medical care on December 26 and he was taken into custody.

Hernandez was transported to the Libertyville Police Department where he was processed and charged.

He was then transported to the Lake County Jail where he was released from custody after appearing in First Appearance Court.
