A man had to be rescued by the fire department and transported to the hospital after he and a child fell through stairs that collapsed at a residence in Crystal Lake.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 4:55 p.m. on December 25 to the 1500 block of Trailwood Drive.
A fire department incident report obtained Friday by Lake and McHenry County Scanner said paramedics were initially dispatched for a fall call.
A 911 caller reported a 33-year-old man and a 3-year-old child fell into the basement after the stairs broke, according to fire department radio traffic.
The report said the incident was upgraded for a second ambulance, a battalion chief and a fire engine to respond to assist.
The 911 caller reported the 3-year-old child was not trapped but the adult male victim was still trapped.
The ambulance crew arrived and confirmed one victim was still in the basement after the stairs collapsed into the basement, the report said.
Firefighters worked to remove the man from the basement and take him to an awaiting ambulance.
The man was injured and designated in the report as an “advanced life support” patient.
He was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley for treatment.
His condition was not known. The child was not transported to the hospital.
Further information regarding what may have led to the stairs collapsing was not included in the report. Numerous attempts to reach Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Chief Craig Synder following the incident went unanswered.
