A pickup truck crashed into an electrical pole, causing the pole and live wires to fall over and start a fire that shut down Grand Avenue in Gurnee, authorities said.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 5:42 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Grand Avenue and Pine Grove Avenue in Gurnee for a vehicle crash.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said a pickup truck crashed into an electrical pole.

The pickup truck was attempting to avoid striking another vehicle when it hit the pole, Gaylor said.

The pole fell down and several live electrical wires hit the wet pavement.

The wires touching the ground caused sparks and a small fire, Gaylor said.

The occupants in the truck were able to get out on their own.

ComEd was requested to the scene to repair the damage, which resulted in power going out in the area.

Grand Avenue in front of the Speedway gas station was shut down by police due to the incident.

The electricity was restored the same evening, Gaylor said.

No injuries were reported from anyone in the truck or surrounding area.
