Police observed signs of drunk driving from a subject who crashed their pickup truck into a building off Route 137 in Waukegan last Friday, causing them to sustain non-life-threatening injuries, police officials said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 11:06 p.m. on  January 5 to 550 South Genesee Street off Route 137 in Waukegan for a report of a single-vehicle crash.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the vehicle involved was a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado.

The Chevrolet crashed into a utility pole and into the northeast corner of the building, which belongs to a tile installation company.

The driver was reportedly trapped in the vehicle, according to fire department radio traffic.

Emergency crews arrived and found the Chevrolet had sustained heavy damage.

The driver involved had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, Chastain said.

Officers also smelled an alcoholic beverage.

Paramedics transported the driver to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan with non-life-threatening injuries, Chastain said.

It is unknown what charges, if any, have been filed against the driver.
