A Lake County sheriff’s canine successfully helped officers capture a man wanted after allegedly committing a residential burglary in Libertyville Monday evening.

The Libertyville Police Department responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the 800 block of Paddock Lane in Libertyville.

Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Axel and his handler were requested by Libertyville officers around 7:30 p.m. Monday to assist in the suspect search.

Axel arrived and began barking at the doorway while Deputy Gauer made announcements inside.

Gauer warned to anyone in the home that Axel would be released if they did not come out, the sheriff’s office said.

A man acknowledged being inside but refused to exit and Axel began searching the home.

The suspect soon surrendered before Axel reached him. The Libertyville Police Department took him into custody without further incident.
