A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by an SUV while walking in the roadway along Sheridan Road in Waukegan Monday evening.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 7:20 p.m. Monday to the area of Sheridan Road and Miraflores Avenue for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Bystanders told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

The pedestrian, who was walking in the roadway just north of the intersection, was seen lying in the roadway after being struck, the bystanders said.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said officers arrived and found a black Chevrolet Tahoe had been involved in the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 37-year-old woman, remained at the scene and was fully cooperative with officers, Chastain said.

Officers found no signs of impairment from the woman, who had just left a gym prior to the incident.

The driver involved told officers the pedestrian suddenly appeared in front of her vehicle.

A witness statement confirmed what the driver reported to officers, Chastain said.

The pedestrian, who officers were unable to immediately identify, was unconscious, Chastain said.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not known.
