Two suspects were taken into custody after a stolen car rammed police cars and struck a police officer in the parking lot of a Starbucks in Waukegan Saturday morning.

The Waukegan Police Department was investigating a stolen vehicle around 10 a.m. Saturday at the Starbucks, 3300 Grand Avenue.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said officers approached the vehicle, a white sedan, and it attempted to flee.

The vehicle struck several vehicles, including two police squad cars.

The male passenger of the vehicle attempted to run away on foot and officers gave chase, Chastain said.

As the passenger fled, the female driver struck an officer with the open passenger car door while continuing to try and drive away.

The officer was knocked to the ground and suffered injuries to his elbow, Chastain said.

The two suspects were eventually taken into custody and were believed to be overdosing after having just injected drugs.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded to the scene with three ambulances.

Both of the car’s occupants were transported to an area hospital to be treated for the overdose, Chastain said.

The officer injured was also transported to the hospital.

The investigation is still ongoing and charges have not been announced yet.
