Police say a suspect is in custody after he stabbed another man in the face with a knife, causing a severe injury, inside a bar in Harvard early Friday morning.

The Harvard Police Department, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Woodstock Police Department responded around 12:11 a.m. Friday to Front Street Tap, 106 East Front Street, for a report of a disturbance inside the bar.

Harvard Chief of Police Tyson Bauman said it was initially reported two men were fighting and one of them had been stabbed in the face with a knife.

Officers arrived to find two men actively fighting inside the establishment.

Officers were able to separate the two subjects and discovered a 36-year-old man had suffered a severe laceration to his face, Bauman said.

The second man, identified as Michael A. Schallmoser, 35, of Poplar Grove, had superficial facial injuries.

The seriously injured man was transported by ambulance to Javon Bea Hospitalโ€“Riverside in Rockford by the Harvard Fire Protection District.

A medical helicopter was initially requested but no helicopters were available nearby.

Bauman said the 36-year-old man has since been released from the hospital after undergoing treatment.

Schallmoser was transported to Mercy Harvard Hospital by the Marengo Fire/Rescue Districts where he was treated and also released.

Schallmoser was arrested upon his release and charged with aggravated battery, aggravated battery in a public place, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

He is currently on parole for an aggravated domestic battery by strangulation case out of Cook County for which he received five years in prison, records show.

Schallmoser was released from the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) in September 2022.

The IDOC has issued a parole violation warrant for Schallmoser following the stabbing incident, Bauman said.

Schallmoser was transported to the McHenry County Jail where he remains held.
