Approximately 20 acres of land burned during a brush fire fueled by strong winds that took approximately an hour to extinguish in Lakemoor Thursday afternoon.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 4:08 p.m. Thursday to the 600 block of Arbor Circle in Lakemoor for a report of a field fire.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said a fire engine crew arrived five minutes later and confirmed a large field fire.

The response was upgraded to include three fire engines, two brush trucks and a specialized wildland firefighting ATV.

Harwood said the fire was labor-intensive to bring under control and extinguish due to the area’s remoteness with a lack of vehicle access points. Strong winds fueled the fire.

Firefighters from McHenry and the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District had to fight the fire on foot with hand tools and backpack-style water fire extinguishers.

Harwood said the area had steep hills with knee-high brush and several tree lines.

A specialized ATV equipped with a fire pump was eventually used to assist in extinguishing the remainder of the fire.

It took approximately an hour to fully extinguish the fire, Harwood said.

“Due to the aggressiveness of the firefighters, the fire was fully extinguished before damaging any nearby structures,” Harwood said.

Approximately 20 acres of land burned. There were no injuries reported to any firefighters or bystanders.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Harwood said. The Lakemoor Police Department also said the cause was unknown but that it was possibly from lightning.

The Spring Grove Fire Protection District and the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District assisted in handling other simultaneous emergency calls that were occurring in McHenry during the fire.
