A Lake County sheriff’s canine helped track down a burglary offender in Vernon Hills and officers then chased down the suspect after he ran from them.

The Vernon Hills Police Department responded Thursday evening to the area of Cherry Valley Road and Court of Elm for a report of a burglary.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said Deputy Andrew Martini and Canine Danno were dispatched to the 300 block of Court of Elm around 8:35 p.m. to assist in searching for the suspect.

Danno tracked for several blocks in the residential neighborhood and a perimeter was set up.

The male suspect was located in the 900 block of Westmoreland Drive and the suspect ran from officers, according to police radio traffic.

Officers chased after the suspect eastbound on Westmoreland Drive before taking him into custody in the 300 block of Richard Court.

The suspect was taken into custody around 9:22 p.m., Covelli said.

Vernon Hills police officials said they did not have police reports finalized yet and could not provide information on the incident.

It is unclear what charges have been filed in the case.
