A man who allegedly led officers on a pursuit that ended in Zion last month and has been on the run with at least 14 warrants has been captured at a motel near Libertyville.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received information around 4:20 a.m. Monday about a wanted subject possibly staying at Doe’s Motel, 31228 North Route 45 in unincorporated Libertyville.
The subject, Barry May III, 38, of Waukegan, was determined to be inside one of the rooms at the motel after deputies arrived, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
Deputies made several announcements instructing May to exit his room but he initially refused.
May eventually exited the room just prior to sheriff’s deputies making entry to arrest him, Covelli said.
He was taken into custody without further incident. May had a total of at least 14 warrants out for his arrest.
On January 8, the Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin Police Department initiated a vehicle pursuit around 5 p.m.
The chase, involving a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado U-Haul, traveled along Green Bay Road into Illinois from Wisconsin, according to Zion Police Department Lt. Derek Zaloudek.
Officers identified the driver as May and they knew he was wanted for multiple offenses, Zaloudek said.
Officers successfully deployed tire deflation devices at some point during the chase.
The Chevrolet was abandoned on Butterfield Lane south of Pheasant Run in Zion, Zaloudek said.
Zaloudek said May fled from the Chevrolet and the vehicle was recovered by officers.
Officers learned that May escaped from the immediate area after the chase.
The Pleasant Prairie Police Department announced last month that May was “Pleasant Prairie’s most wanted.”
He lives in Illinois but frequents southeastern Wisconsin “where he likes to commit crimes,” police said.
Pleasant Prairie obtained warrants for May charging him with possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing and recklessly endangering safety.
Numerous other departments in Wisconsin, including Greenfield, Kenosha, and Racine, had warrants out for May’s arrest.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Altamont, Tennessee Police Department have both also had “the displeasure of dealing with Barry” and had warrants out for his arrest, Pleasant Prairie police officials said.
May was also wanted for fleeing from an officer in Lake Zurich in November. A warrant was issued in that case last month.
May has previously been arrested by the Antioch, Zion and Waukegan police departments and in Michigan.
“Barry’s hobbies include drug use, retail theft, drug dealing causing death, obstructing officers, fleeing & eluding, hit & run, forgery, OWI, battery, and not appearing for court,” the Pleasant Prairie Police Department said.
Court records show May was transported to the Lake County Jail following his arrest on Monday. He was ordered detained.
