A 23-year-old man is in critical condition after he drove his car off the roadway and crashed into a tree near Harvard Thursday morning, authorities said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Harvard Fire Protection District responded around 4:47 a.m. Thursday to the 17000 block of McGuire Road in unincorporated Harvard.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find a single-vehicle crash with injuries. Mercyhealth MD-1 was also dispatched to the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic was traveling westbound on McGuire Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Chevrolet, driven by a 23-year-old Woodstock man, crossed over the roadway for unknown reasons.

The vehicle exited to the west and came to rest after striking a tree.

Sheriff’s officials said the driver was not wearing his seatbelt but the car’s airbags deployed during the collision.

The 23-year-old was the sole occupant of the Chevrolet. He suffered critical injuries.
