A suspect carjacked and injured a victim in the parking lot of the Lake Forest Oasis before leading state police on a pursuit on Interstate 94, officials said.

The Illinois State Police responded around 3:40 a.m. Thursday to the Lake Forest Oasis, 13783 East Oasis Service Rd in Lake Forest, for a report of a theft.

An attendant to the 7-Eleven store at the rest stop reported a male white, approximately 65 years old, stole cigarettes.

Cameras captured the suspect walking around the parking lot attempting to open car doors, according to a 911 dispatcher.

While state troopers were still responding, it was learned that the suspect forcefully carjacked a driver who was getting gasoline at the gas station near the 7-Eleven.

The victim fought back and tried to get his blue Hyundai Elantra back but suffered injuries in the process.

The suspect sped off in the victim’s vehicle as state troopers arrived on the scene, a state police spokesperson said.

The suspect backed the stolen Hyundai into a responding state police squad and a traffic stop was attempted.

The state trooper involved, who was uninjured, reported there was damage to the Hyundai and the airbags deployed.

The suspect refused to stop and a police pursuit ensued on eastbound Interstate 94 from the Lake Forest Oasis, the spokesperson said.

The pursuit was discontinued after the stolen vehicle exited Interstate 94 at Cicero Avenue on the north side of Chicago.

The victim of the carjacking was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
