Firefighters assisted a driver from her car to the shore after she drove off the roadway into a pond in Gurnee and the vehicle became submerged.

The Gurnee Fire Department responded around 6:15 a.m. Thursday to the area of 1350 Tri State Parkway in Gurnee for a report of a vehicle crash.

Officers arrived on the scene and reported a car into the retention pond.

A female driver was out of the car and sitting on top of the vehicle, which was sinking and almost fully submerged.

Officials said the woman remained on top of the car until firefighters arrived.
